What is compounding?
Compounding tailors the medication to the patient, not the patient to the medication.
Compounding is the process of creating “custom” medications. At one time, nearly all prescriptions were compounded. With the beginning of mass drug manufacturing in the 1950s and ‘60s, compounding rapidly declined. The pharmacist’s role as a preparer of medications quickly changed to that of a dispenser of manufactured dosage forms. However, the “one-size-fits-all” nature of many mass-produced medications meant that some patients’ needs were not being met. Commercially available drugs were formulated, patented, and marketed to help most of the people, most of the time.
At Tipton Compounding Pharmacy, our focus is returning back to the roots of medicine by using compounded medications that are customized for you. Your pharmacist is trained in compounding a wide variety of creams, gels, suspensions, suppositories, capsules and other formulations that can make medications easier to administer.
